Is There a Strict Pattern or Order for Worship?

From time to time we interact with questions. If you have a question you’d like answered, send it to redeemingfamily@gmail.com.

My answer is as follows: that depends on what you mean by "strict". There is certainly in scripture a pattern set down of things forbidden, and things instructed, commanded, and permitted (note that each of those things are categories, not redundancies) in worship.

The way each group of biblical Christians interprets those prohibitions, instructions, commands, and permissions will then act as the strict guidelines for reverent and jubilant worship expressed in service to God.

I've worshipped in a great many churches and contexts, some which have been more biblically faithful, others that have been faithful, but simply less mature or knowledgeable of the Word of the Lord.

Not everyone will be at the same point in sanctification or maturity and as such differences are bound to occur even among brothers as they seek to faithfully uphold the truth of scripture regarding worship.

Has God said what his people may not do (in a manner that would be pleasing to Him) should do, must do, and can do in worship? The answer to that question is a resounding 'yes'. How we carry on from here is a matter of how we view the prohibitions, instructions, commands, and permissions within scripture.
