A Halloween Alternative- Movie Night

Our Favorite Alternative to Trick or Treating

Halloween can be trying for many of us who avoid the holiday. We’ve already shared how in our family, we celebrate Reformation Day. We attend a lecture given on the Reformation, watch a video on Martin Luther, and do a workbook that teaches about different leaders of the Reformation. All these things are ways that we are turning toward Christ and away from this world. Throughout all these fun activities, Halloween night is still tricky. It can be hard for our kids to hear others outside giggling and running around. In order to help our kids not feel like they are missing out, we do a yearly movie night! Now, we have weekly movie nights, but this movie night goes above and beyond those usual nights.

Our movie night on Halloween takes place upstairs in a bedroom! We put as many mattresses as we can on the floor of the boy’s bedroom. We bring the TV and DVD player up from the living room and even let the kids eat in bed. They love the excitement of watching a movie in the bedroom all snuggled together on the floor in a huge bed. Add to that the joy of eating in their rooms and they could care less about what’s going on outside. We make it a fun night with a silly family movie and contests to see how dark we can keep the house (this way we don’t get distracted by trick-or-treaters). I thought it would be fun to share a list of some of the movies we enjoy watching as a family that might now be super common.

Favorite Movies

  1. Swiss Family Robinson

  2. Shawn the Sheep

  3. Wallace and Gromit

  4. Chicken Run

  5. Disney Animated Robin Hood

Favorite Allergy (Egg Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, Wheat Free) Friendly Snacks

  1. Popcorn (you can make your own caramel and have caramel popcorn)

*You can make your own caramel by melting butter brown sugar and a little vanilla in the microwave, and mixing every minute until all the brown sugar is dissolved.

  2. Tortilla Chips

  3. Nut Free Puppy Chow (mix melted butter with plain Chex and add powdered sugar, an alternative is to add butter and powdered sugar to chocolate Chex mix)

  4. Homemade ice cream (contains milk) Mix milk, vanilla, and sugar together them, then pop in the ice cream maker. Alternatively, you can mix milk, sugar, and vanilla together, put in the freezer, and stir every 30 minutes until frozen.

  5. Homemade Trail Mix: We mix Chex cereal (any kind) with chocolate chips (Enjoy Life), raisins, and popcorn

  6. Chocolate Milk or Hot Chocolate

Creating a special celebration as an alternative to trick or treating, doesn’t need to be hard or difficult. These are all snacks that I keep around the house and are eaten on a weekly basis. What makes it special is the time of day the snack is eaten and the environment. If we as parents, show our children how fun and exciting something is they will follow us. I hope this helps your family with your alternative trick-or-treating celebration.
