Grandpa's Mustard Tree- A Poem Based on Luke 13:18-19

Guest Author Series

Grandpa's Mustard Tree By: Ali

Based off of Luke 13:18-19

Lucy Linger visited her Grandpa every week. Her Grandpa took care of the trees. He planted all different kinds, but mostly mustard trees, because Grandpa always said that the mustard tree was a good tree to have.

One day Lucy visited her Grandpa. He was sitting under one of the mustard trees.

"Hello Grandpa!" She called.

"Hello, Lucy!" He called back.

Lucy walked up to him.

"Grandpa," she asked, "What kind of seed does a mustard tree come from?"

"A mustard seed comes from the smallest of all seeds. But it grows into the biggest of all trees." Grandpa answered.

"When I was a boy, my father planted this tree. I, my sisters, and my brother, all waited eagerly for the tree to grow. We watched it every day. While we did our chores, it endured hard winters, scorching heat, and windy days. And still, we waited. And waited. And waited. It took a very long long time to grow, and through it came from the smallest seed it grew into the biggest tree of all! Me and my brothers and sisters played under its shade, and birds of the air took refuge in it. Jesus compares the Kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard seed in the Gospels."

"Wow Grandpa!" cried Lucy. "I hadn't heard that story before! The other day, Daddy was reading that Jesus talked about a mustard seed."

"Yes. Your mother told me you were reading about it."

Lucy lay on her grandpa's arm. "And Grandpa, later, could we plant our own mustard tree?" Lucy asked.

Grandpa stood up and answered,

"Yes Lucy, let's do it now."

So hand-in-hand they walked off, leaving the mustard tree to be a refuge for the birds of the air and shade for any passersby.
